Sex-links are cross-bred chickens. Baby chicks can be sexed at birth by their color.
Two common varieties are the black sex-link (also called Black Stars) and the red sex-link (also called Red Stars).
Black Sex-Link or Black Stars are a cross between a Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire rooster and a Barred Rock hen.
Chicks of both sexes hatch out black. But the males will have a white/yellow dot on their heads. Males will pattern out like the Barred Rocks and some will have a
few red feathers. The females will stay mostly black and will get some red/gold feathers in their necks and breast. Black Sex-Links are often referred to as Rock
Reds.
"Red Sex-Link or Red Stars are the result of various crosses.
The cross that we use is between a Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire rooster and a Silver Laced Wyandotte. This cross produces the Cinnamon Queen.
Males will hatch out white or light cream color. They will feather out to pure white and have a few black feathers. The Females hatch out buff or red and they
feather out Red with White or tinted undercolor.
